Job Overview:

A Junior Network Engineer is responsible for supporting the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network systems and equipment. This role is an entry-level position in the IT networking field, ideal for individuals looking to develop their skills and expertise in networking technologies. The Junior Network Engineer will work closely with senior engineers and other IT staff to ensure the efficient and secure operation of an organization’s network infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

Network Installation & Configuration:

  • Assist in the installation and configuration of networking equipment, including routers, switches, firewalls, and access points.
  • Support the setup of local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and wireless networks.
  • Help configure network devices with proper IP addressing, routing protocols, and VLAN configurations.

Network Monitoring & Troubleshooting:

  • Monitor network performance using network management tools, identifying issues such as slow speeds, outages, and connectivity problems.
  • Assist in diagnosing and troubleshooting network issues, including connectivity failures, misconfigurations, and hardware malfunctions.
  • Perform basic network tests (e.g., ping, traceroute) to identify network issues and escalate more complex problems to senior engineers.

Network Support & Maintenance:

  • Provide day-to-day support for network users, including assisting with connection issues, network configurations, and other network-related queries.
  • Assist in maintaining network documentation, including network diagrams, configurations, and change logs.
  • Support routine maintenance tasks, such as firmware updates and configuration backups for networking devices.

Network Security:

  • Assist in the implementation and management of basic network security measures, including firewalls, access controls, and VPN configurations.
  • Monitor security logs and help identify potential security threats or breaches.
  • Support the enforcement of company network security policies.

Collaboration & Learning:

  • Work closely with senior network engineers and other IT staff to learn best practices, troubleshooting methods, and new networking technologies.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and other opportunities to improve networking skills.
  • Assist with network projects as needed, gaining exposure to larger-scale network design and implementation efforts.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Document network configurations, installations, and changes for future reference.
  • Assist in creating and updating internal documentation and knowledge bases related to network issues and solutions.

Requirements:

Technical Skills:

  • Basic understanding of networking concepts (e.g., TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switching).
  • Familiarity with networking equipment, such as routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points.
  • Knowledge of network monitoring tools (e.g., PRTG, SolarWinds) and basic troubleshooting techniques (e.g., ping, traceroute, packet capture tools like Wireshark).

Problem-Solving & Analytical Skills:

  • Strong ability to identify and troubleshoot basic network issues.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently when required.

Communication Skills:

  • Good verbal and written communication skills, able to effectively interact with team members and end users.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical staff.

Certifications (Preferred, but not required):

  • CompTIA Network+ or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or equivalent networking certifications are a plus.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Some hands-on experience in network administration, IT support, or similar roles is a plus but not required.

Working Conditions:

  • May require occasional on-call or after-hours work for network maintenance or troubleshooting.
  • The role may involve on-site work and occasional travel to different locations for installations or support tasks.
